The OBsessions Vol. 6 (Lock Your Holmes)
Jak and I kicked off the new year with the release of the #OBsessions volume 6, codenamed ‘Lock Your Holmes’ (more on the name later). 2023 is truly going to be the ‘Boo Year’ for the Original Beatsters as we have several projects lined up and on schedule to be released in the coming months.
Jak drops ‘Sunny Side Up’ on January 22nd (which includes audio work from Moka Only, DJ Uncle Fester, MLNY and myself, not to mention visual work from Baked Clown Animation & CT Media), my debut solo project ‘Alt Rap’ is currently being mixed & mastered by Breaking Wreckords and the OB’s album ‘The Séance’ just needs some final recordings and finishing touches before it’s ready to surface. There are at least 3 other projects under the OB’s umbrella that will see the light of day in 2023, so yeah, it’s definitely the BOO YEAR! 👻
For volume 6 of the OBsessions I pulled out one of my oldest sample beats (ugh, yes, we use samples from time to time). Probably made this in ’04 or ’05 I’m guessing. It’s sampled from the Sherlock Holmes TV series if I’m not mistaken. I had to remove Sherlock’s dialogue from the beginning of the sample to avoid any copyright issues. You’ll notice that the percussion phases in & out. That was an error that occurred when I double-layered the drums. Sounded cool so it stayed. The stems are long gone for this so it’s just a 4-bar sample repeated, though we did add a beat cut/drop at the beginning of both verses.
Jak & I often use a little pre-written stuff for these sessions as it’s the perfect platform for misfit punchlines. Like most rappers we got books of rhymes that have never been used. However, this time I went with the Sherlock theme and wrote a completely fresh 16 (you can rap-along with my lyrics below the vid).
Jak Hellington took the vid duties on this one again. Man’s got the equipment & the skills. We were crunched for time on this one being the holidays and all, but it came out super dope and is the perfect way for us to kick-off the BOO YEAR!
